2009 NECC Has Record Attendance

The current dire economic times did not stop over 18,000 educators from turning up in Washington D.C. For the 2009 National Educational Computing Conference (NECC) that ran from June 28 through July 1. Educators and exhibitors gathered to exchange strategies for integrating technology into instruction. These discussions may eventually impact technology for online degree programs and campus based classes.

The conference drew people from 71 countries and the number of paid registrations increased by almost 1,000 over last year, according to the organizers. The event was hosted by the International Society for Technology in Education (ISTE) and Leslie Conery, conference chair said that it was an ‘odds-defying’ event in tough economic times. She praised the attendees for their enthusiasm and commitment.

This was ISTE’s 30th anniversary of the conference and the theme of this year’s conference was “Honoring the Past, Celebrating the Present, Envisioning the Future”. The president of ISTE, Helen Padgett, told the crowd that NECC will be referred to simply as ‘ISTE’ at the start of next year. Padgett also commented that now is the time for lasting and systemic change in education as there is a new administration in Washington that understands the need for school reform.
