Microsoft offers a free online learning program that is assisting middle and high school student think about careers they may be interested in pursuing and the skills that they will need in those careers. This can help students identify what type of college degree they might want to aim towards obtaining.

Michigan was the first state to use CareerForward two years ago at the time of its unveiling and that state became the first state in the country to require students to have an online learning experience prior to graduating from high school. CareerForward was developed as a collaboration between Microsoft, Michigan Virtual University and the Michigan Department of Education.

Alabama is now the second U.S. State to require student take part in an online learning experience and the Department of Education in Alabama plans to implement the CareerForward program statewide in the fall. They hop that students will be more well prepared for earning their college degree as well as preparing them for careers later on.

Students must examine their skills and interests while in the program and investigate possible career paths and other aspects to living independently such as how to manage their finances. Students are asked throughout the course to share what they are learning and to write their thoughts down as well as to discuss their thoughts with fellow students, either online or in person.
