About Grants, Scholarships and Work Study
There are many ways to pay the high price of receiving a college degree today that do not include having to take out loans. There are various ‘free money’ options including grants, scholarships and work study programs that do no require repayment.
Grants are available from the federal government, state government, schools and private organizations. The Pell Grant is the largest ‘gift aid’ grant that is awarded to undergrads and it is based on need. How much you get depends on your expected family contribution, the cost of attending college, whether you are full or part time and whether you are attending school for a full academic year or less.
Many organizations, companies and clubs award scholarships and this type of aid is ‘school specific’. There are also large databases online where one can go to fill out applications for various scholarships.
Work study programs allow undergrads as well as graduate students earn money to help pay for their education. These programs encourage community service work and attempt to find work related to the course of study the student is involved in.
