Accreditation in the United States

The US Department of Education recognizes six regional accrediting agencies located throughout the United States. These six primary accrediting agencies are also recognized by the Council for Higher Education Accreditation (CHEA).

These agencies provide accreditation to both traditional colleges and universities as well as specialized online academic organizations. Fortunately it is very easy to find out if an educational organization is accredited and by what agency.

Interested individuals can simply call the accrediting agency directly to inquire about the academic institution they are researching or they can look online to determine if the institution has a current accreditation.
