Adult Literacy
Education officials and researchers have long been concerned about adult literacy in America. The 2003 National Assessment of Adult Literacy (NAAL) evaluated over 19,000 adults 16 years old and older on their English literacy skills. This was the first assessment of adult literacy since the 1992 National Adult Literacy Survey that was administered nationally. Polled individuals were scored on three areas of literacy, which included: Prose, Document, and Quantitative. The 2003 National Assessment of Adult Literacy was an important undertaking that helped shed some light on the current situation with literacy in the U.S. Many Americans would be surprised by the number of percentage that do not rank very high. Students and adults should pursue their college education and do their best to maintain a high level of literacy.
