Assessing College & University Education

In 1998, Russell Edgerton, former president of the American Association for Higher Education organized for a group of educators to get together to interpret research on how students learn and how to use this data to develop a college assessment. This group of education experts created a thorough survey for freshmen and senior college and university students to reflect how many books were read, papers written and hours were spent on class preparation.

The survey also asked about student teamwork, faculty interaction, and the overall campus atmosphere. This survey became know as the National Survey of Student Engagement (NSSE) and was originally administered to approximately 275 colleges and universities in 2000. Now almost a thousand colleges have been surveyed, evaluated and ranked according to statistical data extrapolated from the survey.

This data and the stats allow college administrators, students, parents and teachers to quickly review how well a college or university ranks against others which can be a deciding factor in the choice of where the student will attend.
