Class of 2009′s SAT Scores Are Steady

In 2009, the national SAT scores declined by one point in the areas of reading and writing while math scores stayed about the same. This is according to the U.S. government’s College Board. The average ACT scores were also flat for this year. (ACT is the other major test used for determining college admission).

There were over 1.5 million high school seniors who took the SAT this year in the United States and this was the largest group ever to take the test. This proves that earning a college degree is becoming more and more important to high school students. Forty percent of the test takers belonged to minority groups, which is a two percent increase over last year. The fastest growing minority group taking the SAT was Hispanic students.

Females out-performed their male counterparts on average by 13 points on the writing section but scored 35 points lower than the boys in math and 5 points lower than boys in critical reading.

Student’s family wealth reflected the average scores of the SAT with those from families with over $200,000 in income scoring 68% higher in critical reading than students who come from families who earned less than $20,000 per year. Results were similar with the math and writing scores.
