Colleges Answer Obama’s State of the Union

Higher education is more important than ever before with so many jobs hanging in the balance. In President Barack Obama’s State of the Union message, major emphasis was put on reducing the cost of college. Obama said that no one should end up broke trying to pay for college.

The President talked about setting a cap on annual student loan payments at 10 percent of a person’s income. He also wants student loans to be forgiven after a person has been paying them back for 20 years or after ten years if that student works in public service. President Obama also said that colleges must do their part to work to keep costs low.

Obama also asked the Senate to follow the House in passing a bill that would give community colleges over $9 billion. The nation has seen a dramatic increase in the number of students who have enrolled in community colleges due to the lower tuition costs and the convenience of attending a local school.
