Colleges & the Economy

The talk this past week at the National Association for College Admission Counseling’s yearly gathering of college admissions officers and high school counselors seemed to center around the economy.

The high school counselors in attendance in Baltimore said that this year parents are worried that they cannot afford to send their children to college due to the high price of tuition that is attached to earning a college degree.

Admission officers reported that they fear further price hikes and cuts in school’s budgets will stop students from even applying in the years to come.

The high school counselors and college officials both said that the full effects of the economic crunch have not been felt yet because families were prepared in advance to send their kids to college for the 2009 application year. They say no real significant dips this year but expect to notice some drops in applications next year.

The 5,000 in attendance at this year’s annual convention moved from discussion to discussion and packed the session on the changes in the FAFSA or Free Application for Federal Student Aid. The new changes will greatly simply the notoriously difficult to fill out form.
