Commission on the Future of Higher Education

In 2005, Department of Education Secretary Spellings formed an organization called the Commission on the Future of Higher Education, which was designed to research and assess the condition of higher education. The Commission was also charged with developing a detailed strategy for “postsecondary education that would better serve Americans and address the economic and workforce needs for our nation’s future”. According to the Department of Education, the Commission also “held public meetings and hearings across the country and engaged students and families, policymakers, business leaders and the academic community in a national dialogue about all key aspects of higher education”. The findings of the Commission prompted the Secretary of Education to pursue steps necessary to improve the state of colleges and university enrollment and completion nationwide.
