December Town Hall for Students

Department of Education Secretary Arne Duncan accompanied President Obama to a high school in Arlington, Virginia when Obama made his nationally televised Back to School Speech. Obama encouraged the young people in the crowd to work hard and graduate.

On December 15th the Department of Education’s television program will host a special edition town hall. The hour long event will be spent with Arne Duncan taking comments and questions from students in the studio audience as well as students from all around the country via phone, email and video.

Students are allowed to contribute to the conversation by submitting a question or posting answers on some of the questions asked. At the town hall meeting, some of the questions asked included how can students assume the responsibility for their own education, how we can better prepare students for college, how we can encourage more students to get involved in their community and who and what are the most important influences on today’s young people.

These town halls are a great platform for increasing communication between the Depart of Education and the students affected by its decisions. College students rarely have a platform to present their point of view about the policies that will influence their academic futures so these events provide a much needed resource to the individuals that will one day lead our country.
