Education Feels the Pinch of Budget Cuts

Colleges and universities around the nation are feeling the pinch of budget cuts due to the economy. At City College of San Francisco’s Microcomputer Applications for Business 101′s first day of class, there were several extra students standing in the aisles and cluttering the doorway. The instructor told the crowd there there were only enough computers for 28 students.

Normally, CCSF would hire another instructor to teach another class, but California’s $26 billion deficit means that there is no money for extra teachers. It was announced that only the first 28 students who registered could take the class. This scene has been repeated at college’s all across California as well as in other recession-hit states. Many students are stuck in limbo about the future of their education.

Public colleges across the United States are receiving less money per student which influences the number of classes they can offer. Educational administrators say that they simply do not have the money to do anything about the situation so they are being forced to turn students away.
