Families Planning for College Face High Costs
The poor economy has made planning and attending college tougher than usual for many families across the United States. With job losses and dwindling savings, many families who wish to send their high school grads on to college are struggling to make ends meet.
This is particularly true in the state of Michigan-the state in the US with the highest unemployment rate. The auto industry has taken some hard hits over the past twelve months, leaving many Michiganders out of work.
Michigan lawmakers did not include a state funded scholarship program in its budget this year and the future funding is on shaky ground as well.
Some parents are struggling more than others to cover the rising cost of college and some are rethinking their priorities.
Many parents who had previously wanted their kids to attend private colleges are now encouraging their recent high school grads to enroll in community or public colleges.
Overall, enrollment at private colleges has remained steady while enrollment at cheaper community colleges is on the rise all across the nation.
