Bowdoin College, located in Brunswick, Maine offers a unique class for their college students. The Bowdoin College English Department has course study for “The Horror Film in Context” where students read and interpret works of horror by such well-known horror icons as from Edgar Allen Poe, Alfred Hitchcock, Wes Craven, Brian De Palma, Sigmund Freud and Roman Polanski to name a few. The purpose of this class is to have students understand, analyze and discuss how horror works depict differences and idiosyncrasies in gender, class, and family. They explore cultural, theoretical, and literary horror concepts and discuss the ways these films can represent violence, fear, and paranoia in society.
