Having an Online Degree Impresses Recruiters
Students graduating in the U.S. with MBAs are entering the most competitive career pool in years according to the Graduate Management Admission Council’s recent research.
With more high quality college degree earners vying for top jobs within management, IT, banking and consulting, how do those students who earn their degrees online compare to the full-time students according to the corporate recruiters?
Ten years ago the full time students won every time. Online degrees were not highly regarded and were thought to be less academically challenging and ‘easier’. In reality, distance learning students have to juggle work, family and their studies in order to succeed.
Public perception has changed recently as there have been significant gains in technology and vast improvements in the quality of learning from home. This improved attitude has spread even to recruiters.
Distance degrees have been criticized for lacking face-to-face elements of traditional learning like team building and working together with other students on class projects. Distance learners have other qualities that compensate for this however.
UK talent manager for Heinz, Rebecca Fielding says that she is seeing more high quality candidates coming from distance learning backgrounds and that these people have been balancing family and work and can develop the face-to-face skills relatively quickly.
