How to Avoid Enrolling in Non-Accredited Colleges

Making sure that the school you plan on attending is an accredited institution is a vital part of choosing a college. You will be spending a lot of money working toward your college degree, so you want to be certain that your school of choice is legitimate.

You can verify if a school is accredited by checking with the Council for Higher Education or CHEA. The CHEA has a database of thousands of accredited schools. You can go to their website, agree to the terms and then search by college name, type of program and so forth. You can rest assured that if the school you are interested in is on the CHEA database, you will be attending an accredited school and receiving a valid education.

You can also find out by checking for different types of accreditation. Some schools that offer online education are accredited by the Distance Education Training Council. Just be sure that the accrediting organization is recognized by the CHEA.

Accredited schools are willing to prove their accreditation, so be sure to ask. If they refuse to give you any solid proof, then do not consider attending that particular college.
