Institute of Education Sciences

The Institute of Education Sciences (IES) was created within the U.S. Department of Education as a result of the Education Sciences Reform Act of 2002. The primary mission of IES is “to provide rigorous evidence on which to ground education practice and policy”.  Institute of Education Sciences is made up of four centers that each contributes to the overall effectiveness of the organization in reaching its mission. This is accomplished through the work of its four centers. In November 2002, the first Director of the IES, Grover J. Whitehurst, was appointed to a 6-year term. The IES has been a great source of information for academic researchers and the Department of Education.
