Is ‘College For All’ A Good Idea?
When schools attempt to prepare all high school students for college, it can be a bit controversial. It is simply not true that all high school students are interested in earning a college degree and most teachers as well as parents would probably agree.
Of course, all high school students must be prepared to graduate and they all must receive the best education possible. Raising student achievement levels must be done one student at a time. But it is not necessary that all students take algebra for example, as many students will simply go on to find employment immediately following their high school studies.
Students should be set up to succeed as they need and deserve the option of taking multiple paths to success. Some students need more time than others to reach their goals and some need more resources. Some need tutors and some others may need mentors.
It is a fact that technology has driven up the complexity level of nearly everything we do. Students of today need to be prepared to live and work in the 21st century and we must keep in mind that even if a student is not ready for college that he or she is not automatically sentenced to a lifetime of marginal employment nor second-class citizenship.
