Kentucky Sees A Rise In High School Graduation Rates
The state of Kentucky’s public schools continue to show improvement according to a recent report that was released. The high school graduation rates are on the incline in Kentucky as this rate has improved by nine percentage points between the years 1996 and 2006.
The Kentucky schools were equal to or exceeded the national averages in all categories with the exception for African Americans with their graduation rates in 2006. The rates were broken down by race and gender.
The 2009 report lists 33 “overachiever” school district across the United States whose 2006 graduation rates were well over the anticipated levels by at least ten percentage points. Paducah Independent Schools was one of the districts cited which had a 75 percent graduation rate in 2006 that was eleven points higher than what was expected.
The report also stated that the country’s graduation rate has been steadily improving over the last ten years, but it was also noted that the rate declined by a little over 1 percent from the year 2005 to 2006. That decline is the first reduction in ten years and is something the country should concern itself with, says the study.
Cindy Heine from a Kentucky education advocacy group, the Prichard Committee for Academic Excellence stated that Kentucky has made more progress than other states as there has been a real push to improve the graduation rates in Kentucky recently and that those efforts are paying off.
