NAAL Results
The results of the 2003 National Assessment of Adult Literacy (NAAL) highlighted several useful insights on adult literacy in America. The assessment was based on a 500-point scale and judged on four levels of literacy: Below Basic, Basic, Intermediate, and Proficient. To assure the most accurate results were obtained, a large and diverse group of individuals were selected to help make sure that the scores were adequately representative of the general population. The NAAL examined changes in literacy levels among the adult population of the U.S. The NAAL provided for assessments of adults with a wide array of different demographic characteristics like gender, race, age, and ethnicity. The NAAL report examined how American adults, at or above age 16 years old hade varying degrees of literacy. Te report included varying levels of education from high school dropouts to college graduates.
