News Not So Good For Students of Journalism

The University of Georgia has reported that journalism and mass communication students are having a hard time finding employment once they have earned their college degrees. Only 6 in 10 of the grads had full time employment six to eight months after graduation. This is the lowest level of full time employment reported in 23 years.

It was also found that different kinds of mass communication and journalism students felt the collapse of the economy and their chosen field to some degree. The public relations students found the job market a little less hostile after graduation compared to students who studied print media, telecommunications or advertising.

This trend is happening all across the United States and is not just limited to students in the state of Georgia. It is hoped that an economic recovery will turn these numbers around for future journalism and communications graduates. Students majoring in and graduating with journalism and communication degrees may have fewer career choices when they graduate but some are finding jobs in related careers until something more desirable becomes available. Students in numerous fields of study have also reported difficulty obtaining full time careers after finishing four years of study.
