Safety Guidelines
An easy rule of thumb to help safety officials and administrators at universities and colleges determine whether or not an area should be considered a part of the campus or at least subject to the same safety consideration as the actual campus is documented in the 2005 Handbook for Campus Crime Reporting. It states that “On campus†is what most people traditionally think of as the main part or core of an institution. A building or property that an institution owns, rents or leases is considered to be “controlled by†the institution. A building or property that is owned by a third party that has a written contract with the institution is also considered to be controlled by the institution. “Reasonably contiguous†requires some judgment on the part of the institution. A building or property would be considered reasonably contiguous if: 1) it is in a location that you consider to be, and treat as, an integral part of your main or core campus; and 2) it is covered by the same security policies as that campus.â€
