Secretary Spellings Observations

The Secretary of Education also makes the following observations about the affordability of obtaining college and university educations for students of all ages, “There is little to no information on why costs are so high and what we’re getting in return. Tuition continues to outpace inflation, health care costs and family income levels. While funding for Pell Grants has increased nearly 50 percent over the past five years, the financial aid system remains in urgent need of reform. We must streamline the process to help students and families prepare, plan and pay for college.” By making the process through which students obtain financial assistance to attend college simpler and more standardized, the Secretary hopes to attract and retain more college applicants and graduates.
