Steps To Take To Earn A Doctorate of Philosophy (Ph.D.) in Education
Earning a Ph.D. in Education is a required step to take for those people who would like to teach at the college level or hold a leadership position at an institution of learning, whether it be at a K-12 school or at a college or university.
You can earn a doctorate of education degree with specializations in elementary and secondary education, adult education, special education and higher education. You should first decide what specific area you are interested in and then speak with an academic advisor. The advisor will help you set goals and lead you in the right direction.
You should register to take the Graduate Record Exam at the Educational Testing Service (ETS) website. This exam is part of the application for admission to a Ph.D. program. You can go to the website and get a free exam preparation study guide to prepare you for the exam.
Once you have selected the school you want to earn the Ph.D. through, you should order your past transcripts, as you will need to send them to the school before the application deadline. For a Ph.D. program, that deadline is normally in December or January.
Once accepted into the Ph.D. program, you must complete the degree classes, conduct research, and prepare and present your dissertation. Most students complete their Ph.D. in education within five years.
