Student Stresses & Creative Strategies
Test time in public schools is a very stressful time for students from the grade school level all the way through college. High School students who set their sights on a college degree are trying to get adequate test scores so that they are admitted to the college of their choice are feeling the pressure.
Now schools are using relaxation training to help students cope. Yoga, tai chi and other popular anxiety-fighting methods are being used by more and more schools to help kids and teens cope with stress. Many schools have done away with midterm exams and class rankings and have even restricted teachers from overloading students with homework. Students in some colleges and universities can even take ‘personal wellness days’ off from time to time.
The economic crisis and family budgets often worries students too. More students these days are feeling stress in college. Studies show that yoga and other stress management methods do indeed benefit students by increasing self esteem. Some students are also now taking online degree classes to eliminate the day to day stress and cost of commuting back and forth to a campus based school.
For students who have too many responsibilities, stress can be overwhelming. A recent poll conducted found that 27 percent of US teens experience stress regularly. If left unchecked, experts warn that stress leads to academic dishonesty, destructive behavior and depression.
By using yoga and other techniques, students can learn how to relax muscle groups, do deep breathing exercises and learn to visualize goals that help to alleviate stress.
