Take note of the Hidden Costs of College

Under U.S. Federal law, it is mandatory that colleges inform students the full cost of attendance. This includes the cost of book, living expenses and all ‘hidden fees’. The price of obtaining a college degree is steep and by knowing exactly how much you will be spending on your college education will have you well prepared.

Most colleges post their COA on their websites, but many post the minimum amounts that do not include smaller fees or very realistic living expenses. Some colleges only provide you this information if you contact them by telephone.

Some of the hidden fees that colleges charge can range from ‘student activity’ fees, gym fees, health clinic fees, lab fees and library fees. There are some colleges that even require that students purchase campus health insurance.

The best thing you can do once you have selected the college you are going to enroll at is to call the school and ask for the specifics regarding all fees that you could be asked to pay. As they say, it is better safe than sorry. You certainly don’t want to be enrolled in a school and find that you cannot afford attending after all, due to hidden fees.

Many students now prefer to get an online college degree. There are most likely less costs involved when comparing an online degree to a campus-based degree.
