The College Bubble-Is it Bursting?
Colleges treat their students as consumers by building fancy buildings and hiring star scholars in order to draw students in. These things were done regardless of how high these investments drove the tuition rates, because, frankly, they worked.
Students have been drawn for years to the large universities that offer a lot of ‘extras’. But today, in light of the weak economy, it appears that the college bubble is bursting as now consumers are questioning whether it is worth it to spend thousands and thousands of dollars to attend college.
The New Yorker magazine is aiming to deflate creative writing programs based on the theory that students who have never had a poem published can teach other students how to write a poem that is publishable.
The cost of a college education is becoming more and more out of reach for many Americans today and this has many people wondering if college enrollment rates will begin to drastically decline. Of course, only time will tell, but one thing that can be expected is that colleges will be trimming back certain programs and finding ways to cut some financial corners.
