Turning Your College Major into A Career
If you are in college and have finally decided what you will be majoring in, Keep in mind that this important decision will likely dictate the path you take for your career. Most of your hard work will be devoted to the subject you chose, although you will also take several general education classes as well.
When you are attending college, it is sometimes hard to imagine life after college. You can easily get wrapped up into the collegiate lifestyle with the tough courses, weekend parties, football games and all of the other academic and social activities you will experience. Before you know it, however, you will be finishing school and entering the workforce, so it is a very good idea for you to have a career plan in mind.
Some college majors like criminal justice and nursing lead to obvious careers. There are other majors however, that are not so obvious including sociology and English literature for example. If you use your imagination you can discover career opportunities that match your major.
If you have a sociology major for example, you can use your knowledge for a career as a mental health worker, day care worker or a public relations specialist, just to name a few.
With an English writing major, you have a skill that is highly valued in multiple career fields. Since you will have learned to communicate effectively through writing, you could become an editorial assistant, a copywriter or a marketing manager with that particular major.
Hopefully you pursue what you love doing while in college and do remember to think about how your major will help you make the transition into the working world.
