What Skills do Students need for College?
Everyone agrees that a college degree is beneficial. Researcher and policymakers both agree that U.S. High school students are lacking in the necessary skills and knowledge they will need to succeed in college. However, there is no consensus as to the definition of ‘college readiness’.
Some organizations, most notably Achieve, a group based in Washington that was formed by business leaders and governors say that more academic rigor during high school defines college readiness by identifying the classes and number of class credits high schoolers should complete before graduation. It is thought that high school students who take higher-level courses are more likely to earn a bachelor’s degree.
There are many varying views concerning college readiness. There are twenty states in the U.S. That spell out specific skills and knowledge that make students ready for college. Thirteen states say that the completion of college-prep courses readies students for college.
The most likely to be used to determine a student’s readiness for college are scores on the major college admission tests such as the ACT and the SAT. ACT research has found that students who meet the test score benchmarks are more likely to earning good grades in introductory-level college courses.
